Every person has a behavior consisted with a message. Leadership is charisma, charisma is a message, a way to behave, and it can be innate. People have some qualities that influence others. It’s something you can practice, something you can learn. Leadership is authority (the ability to influence others with charisma, based on trust).

All leaders are excellent; excellence is achieved through 2 factors: technical factors (the know-how), and human factors (I can be intelligent but if I’m lazy I can’t succeed). Intelligence is not enough.

Excellence is based on 3 E’s:

  1. Efficiency: compare the results against the means I have.
  2. Effectiveness: compare the results with the ends.
  3. Ethics: how do I treat the people to obtain the results?  Trust is the result of ethics.

Leadership is based on Trust. When you feel trust you’re motivated, we have to obtain that our people work with enthusiasm. There for ethics is about happiness, if we’re not happy at work we’re losing 30 to 40% of our happiness. We have to get people to work with enthusiasm.

-Transactional leadership: Management by tasks: people come, do their job, got a payment (salary is the only motivation).

-Transformational leadership: Management by objectives: A challenge is an opportunity to improve.

-Transcendental leadership: Management by missions: we have to identify the mission of every member.

Leadership is excellence in character.

Virtues are qualities of the mind, the will, and the heart that still instill strength of character and stability of personality. Virtue is a habit, it helps us love what is worth loving.

Leadership is created through everyday life. Whenever there’s justice there’s communion and communication.  Prudence helps us see what our reality is. And magnanimity helps us be humble.

We should step outside ourselves, and think of others’ problems.

Growth, continuity, and mission: When you deliver a better service, you accomplish your mission. Also when you communicate you exchange information, it understands each other. We have to understand and respect each other.

Aristotle spoke about the four virtues through ethos (will), logos (reason), pathos (feelings). The message should be ethical and meaningful; leadership must lead to action.

John Maxwell also in his book “the 21 qualities of a leader”, focused on: something to remember something to do, and something to feel. By doing this you provide information to do the job effectively.

Justice means giving to everyone his or her due, it raises communication to the level of trust. While self- control subordinates passions to the spirit and fulfillment of the mission at hand.

Trust and reliability convert communication into communion. Communion is the most authentic communication: it dives into the depths of people’s mind, will and heart.

Where there’s wellbeing and enthusiasm there is higher productivity.

Virtues are the human factor of productivity.
